running books. books for runners.

First of all, I’d like to draw your attention to my new header! My beautiful and talented friend Mariana created it for me! I think she did a great job. Now I need to make her a yummy treat or two as a thank you 🙂

Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to the dentist. I know what you’re thinking and no, that was not sarcasm. I really do love going to my dentist, not because I enjoy getting my teeth scraped (shudder…it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me) but because I love my dentist and his staff! They always remember me and my life and it’s like I get to go hang out with friends for an hour. I’ll be so sad someday when I move and have to find a new dentist’s office. They also always tell me what pretty, healthy teeth I have. A girl can never have too many compliments!

However, when I was little I hated going to the dentist. First of all, he was always pulling out my teeth, which left me with gaping holes for years. YEARS. Secondly, he would tease me about being his girlfriend (in a good humored way) but being the incredibly emotional, sensitive child that I was (ugh, I feel so bad for my mom. Thanks for putting up with me!), it would make me so upset I’d cry. I dreaded the dentist.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, right now is crazy busy at work. I left at 7 pm, only for a break to eat some dinner and then came back to work. I have a HUGE project that needs to go to print by today so it was a necessary evil. However, I figured if I was going to be at work late (I stayed til 10!), that I was going to be happy about it. So I went and got myself a fro yo. I only feel a tiny bit bad about it. It was super delicious. Also, I don’t know why I’m making a fat face. Maybe it’s my guilty face?

The other day I had a friend ask me for suggestions on running books. I’m embarrassed to say I have never read one! I know! I should probably reconsider my blog title. Maybe it should say “See This Girl Eat”…because we all know I do that! (see picture above). Luckily, I have this lovely running/blogging/tweeting community so I reached out and asked for recommendations. Here’s the list I have compiled:

  • How to Run by Paula Radcliffe
  • Born to Run by Christopher McDougall
  • Lazy Girl Running by Laura Fountain
  • Run Like a Mother
  • Runner’s World Big Book of Marathon and 1/2 Marathon Training
  • Running for Women by Kara Goucher
  • No Need for Speed by John Bingham

Holy moly! Looks like my summer is officially booked! I can’t wait to get reading! I hope this gives you some recommendations for running books if you’re in the market for one. I know I am now!

Do you enjoy going to the dentist?

What’s the latest you’ve stayed at work?

Any other running book recommendations?!

belated easter scavenger hunt

My first run with my purple Garmin required matching my compression socks to it. My run was great! I ran harder than I probably should have done, but I felt great and ended  up doing 8 miles with an 8:52 average. Pretty happy about it. I see this Garmin helping me do great things 🙂

Saturday was super fun and filled with family from both sides. My maternal grandparents got home from a two year church service mission to Argentina. I wasn’t able to be at the airport to greet them but I did meet up with the family at my uncle and aunt’s for a late lunch. Unfortunately, by the time I got there I was super hangry (sorry about that, family!) so I didn’t get any pictures because I was too anxious to eat!

Next stop was my dad’s side of the family for a belated Easter scavenger hunt that my grandparents put on every year. It’s super intense! You’ll see what I mean in a second. Luckily, I’m the oldest grandkid, so I still get to participate. Who knows how much longer that will be allowed, so I’m milking it for all it’s worth! Now for the pictures. Hold on to your seat. There’s quite a few:

This cutie knows I won’t tell her no for a piggy back ride.

Here’s how intense the scavenger hunt is. Besides the awesome number of prizes we’re looking for, it’s been personalized on age and gender. My grandparents go all out!

Some views of the older kids side of the scavenger hunt

The little kids’ scavenger hunt is going on up there:

This was the prize table we got to pick from on top of all the prizes we already got!

Some of the cutest girl cousins around! Wish we could have gotten a picture with all of the cousins! We were almost all there!

I just had to show you the view from my grandparents’ back yard. It’s gorgeous! Plus it was a beautiful day on top of it.

After the hunt we had burgers, hot dogs, chips, treats, and even s’mores were going on (although I totally forgot about them until I had already eaten too much…rookie mistake)

Yummy burger, chips and 7 layer dip (aka the key to my heart)

My cute cousin, Becca, that I am lucky enough to live close to and see all the time. It’s the best!

Where do you fall in the order of grandkids? oldest on both sides. I love having lots of little cousins. My youngest one just turned 1! So cute!

Which holidays do your families go all out for?

What did you do over the weekend?

3 concerts for $10

This post has to be SUPER quick because I have to go on my long run, go put in a couple of hours of work, and head to my parents’ house all in the next few hours.

But I just had to tell you about my night last night! I went to a concert featuring He is We, The Ready Set, and Parachute. SO. MUCH. DANG. FUN!!!!!!!!! I have lots of pictures but since you can’t really tell who is who I’ll fill you in 🙂 All of these brought to you by the high quality photos of an iPhone is bad lighting.

Yes that’s right. I paid $10 for this whole show. I got a STEAL!

Waiting for the show to start

The gang!

He is We was up first! I love these guys! They were so down to earth. It was fun to finally hear them live.

The people behind us didn’t want us to stand (cause apparently you don’t stand at concerts) so we went to the floor.

The Ready Set was up next. The shipping company lost all of their instruments and everything so they had to do their whole set acoustically  It was still good! I didn’t know many of their songs but they sing “Love Like Woe”. That’s all I knew. haha

Cell phones are the new lighters.

Parachute was up next and they were SO MUCH FUN! They put on a great show and you bet we stood up and danced our little hearts out. I knew some of their songs but I now need to go buy a whole lot more of them!

At one point the lead singer ran through the floor and up to the sound booth that was 4 feet in front of me. AWESOME. Again, high quality iPhone photo. Sorry.

He told us we by far have the most “amazingly gorgeous women per capita” of anywhere else in the US. I’ll take that!

Then he crowd surfed. It was great.

I have a video of “Kiss Me Slowly” that actually sounds and looks great but I can’t figure out how to get it off my phone and on here. Maybe you’ll just have to wait until a future post. It will be like a special “flash back” treat. 🙂

Alright I need to get going! Off to run an 8 miler with my new Garmin! Woohoo!

What’s the last concert you went to?

Favorite Band/Artist?

What are you doing on this fine Saturday?

it finally came in the mail!

This morning I got my zumba on. It really gets my heart rate up! It’s funny cause there I am, doing some zumba and thinking “Huh. I think I’m getting better at this” and then I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. HA! At least it’s fun right? I love me some cross training.

Last night my friend Taneesa had her birthday party. I know you’re probably thinking “Alyssa, now you’re just making up friends who have birthdays all at the same time”. But I promise I’m not! It’s just how it’s been going lately!

We went to a Mongolian grill and it was sooo delicious! So in case you haven’t been to one of these yet (you totally need to!), here’s how they work. First you load up your bowl with the meat(s), vegetables and sauces that you want:

Next these men will take your food and grill it all up! Right before your little eyes!

Then you’re left with a beautiful meal such as the one pictured below! Oh my, it was sooo good! I’ll definitely be going back.

My meal came with an Asian salad too and it would kind of be like a lie of omission if I didn’t show you a picture of my entire meal.

Here’s the whole gang. It was hard to get everyone in. But what a fun group!

Me with the birthday girl! She’s feeling 22. We may or may not have sung that song…in the restaurant…twice. Happy Birthday, Taneesa! She is also a runner. She’s going to come on my long runs for my marathon training this summer (right Taneesa) 😉

Speaking of running, the MOST exciting thing happened yesterday! My new Garmin Forerunner 10 came in the mail!

I am so dang excited to try this thing out! I’ve heard only good things about it and I’m excited to see how it can help me improve my running.

I was so obsessed with it that I even wore it (for its super powers, obviously) while I wrote my last paper (ah!!) and watched some good ol’ Friends. Best show around. I could NOT get this picture any lighter. Sorry about that. But you can see Phoebe, so that’s nice.

Have you been to a Mongolian grill?

Do you have a running watch? Do you love it??

What’s your favorite 90s TV show?

a birthday, a final and happy things

Just to warn you, the next week or so may be touch and go with posts. Work is insanely busy, the semester is coming to a close and I have a huge project to turn in to print for work by Tuesday. Soooo….don’t feel too bad if I miss a day or two ok? I promise I’m still thinking of you guys! I am also going to continue the wellness discussions from last week, next week so stay tuned!

I missed my speed workout yesterday so I decided to do it today. I did 7 x 400 starting at a 8:30 pace, working my way up to 8:00 for the last one, with a 1 minute recovery in between each one.

Tuesday was my roommate’s birthday and some neighbors threw her a little get together. It was a good time!

We just couldn’t resist the opportunity to all sit on each others’ laps at the same time.

Then yesterday we went for Indian food to keep the celebration going! I got chicken coconut kurma. It’s my favorite. Shelly got Saag Aloof (something like that…it had a ton of spinach. so good!)

My staff has been going through a weekly training class and they have quizzes every week. Yesterday was the final class, with the final test. I was being a creepy boss and took a picture of them while they tested. Can’t believe the training season is over!

The first two boys there are trying to write with their non dominant hand (left hand in their cases). They gave up after a couple of pages of short answer questions. haha! I feel bad for those who have to grade their left hand handwriting 🙂

As I mentioned above, work has been crazy and the other day there was a mishap (that word doesn’t even come close to describing the event) that just pushed my stress levels higher than they’d been in a while. Then yesterday morning I was on Facebook and a friend of mine had posted a link to this website:

The 30 Happiest Facts of All Time

If you follow me on Facebook (ahem. you totally should), then you’ve already seen this. But there’s no harm in viewing it twice! By the time I got to the end, I was smiling more and it completely brightened my day! From then on out, everything seemed so much more manageable. Amazing how just a change in attitude can do that 🙂

Do you like Indian food? What’s your favorite dish?

Which hand is your dominant hand? Can you use both?

What has made you smile lately?

Let’s Talk Books!

Hey friends! Glad so many of you liked the some e-cards post yesterday. I’m going to star putting less effort into my posts 😉 Just kidding. But seriously…

The weather here is getting soo beautiful! It’s climbing into the 50s and 60s through the rest of the week. Wish I had more time to actually be outside and enjoy it! My office doesn’t even have windows. The main way I know what the weather is like outside, is because I have my gmail set to the “bus stop” theme, which changes based on your location’s weather. It’s pretty cute.

So normally I’m a HUGE bookworm. I was one of those kids that got all of the points possible for the summer reading program at the library (yeah I was also the kid that spent her summer doing the summer reading program at the library). But lately it is taking me FOREVER to finish a book! I am currently reading “Change of Heart” by Jodi Picoult and it has been taking me so long! I blame my busy life on not giving me enough time. Usually I try to read a little when I get into bed but I only last a couple of minutes before I start falling asleep. But so far it’s a good book! The story line is a little weird to explain but it’s interesting. I would recommend it 🙂

I am a huge murder mystery fan so I love, love Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark books! They just keep me on the edge of my seat and then I think I figure out the end and then there’s a twist! A new development I never saw coming! Ah! It’s wonderful!

Lately I’ve noticed a lot of futuristic books coming out. A lot of dystopian societies (such as “The Hunger Games” series) and ones where all decisions are made for them (“Matched” and “Divergent”). They’re very entertaining and quick reads. But it also makes me very, very glad I live in a place where I get to make all my own decisions.

Divergent hc c(2)

For work I’ll be reading “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”, which will be a total 180 from the types of books I’m used to reading. I hear it’s good though, so I guess we’ll see! The author will be coming to speak at a convocation, which is always really fun. I like hearing the authors talk about their books. It makes them come alive a little more for me.

What kind of books do you like to read?

Any recommendations?

What is your favorite kind of weather? (dark, gloomy, and rainy for me!)

Monday Funnies

Monday tends to be the least liked day of the week (poor little Monday) and since I am short on time today for a post, I thought I would just share with you some of my favorite someeCards that I’ve found on Pinterest. (I love Pinterest!)

But seriously. I have to avoid Walmart on Saturdays because it’s so frustrating!

Except I would browse for puppies.

Selectively social is such a better way to put it. Little Introvert Alyssa.

“On Wednesdays, we wear pink!” One of the most quotable movies of all time. Or at least of my generation.

I’m sorry, I just don’t like these. I’m sure there’s a time and a place but I doubt most people I see wearing them are about to go on a boat.

One of my pet peeves. This one made me laugh pretty hard. I guess this is ok if you’re working out. But as part of a normal outfit? ehh…

Hope that helped at a little sunshine to your Monday! Have a great day!

Did you do anything fun this weekend?

What’s your favorite someecards that you’ve seen?
