Quick Fixes Don’t Work

There are so many things out there that claim to help you lose weight fast – special diets, magic pills, cleansing smoothies…and so many people are so willing to try everything and anything except the ONE thing that is meant to work and supposed to be the way we lose/maintain a healthy weight: live a healthy lifestyle aka EAT RIGHT AND EXERCISE. (ok that was two things)

Sorry…did I say that too loudly?


I’m not saying that quick fixes don’t work. They definitely can and a lot of people see great results from them. However, there are are few things in particular that are wrong with these quick fixes.

#1: As soon as you go back to your regular habits, your weight will come back. Nobody can live off of smoothies for the rest of their lives. Well, I’m sure they could, but nobody wants to. That doesn’t sound the least bit satisfying.

#2 Many of them cause you to restrict your diet in such strange ways, that you’re not getting all the nutrients that you need from the variety of foods that a clean, healthy diet helps you to consume.

#3 They ignore the need for physical activity as part of a healthy rate of weight loss.


You’re heard the old saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Well, your body didn’t get to where it is now in a day either, whether that is for better or for worse. If you want to improve the way your body looks and feels it’s going to take time and hard work! A healthy rate of weight loss is 1/2 – 2 lbs per week. That’s it. For those who have quite a bit to lose, they may see a larger amount of weight loss to start out but it will gradually slow down. This is ok! It means you’re making small, realistic changes that will lead to lifestyle changes and the ability to maintain the weight loss/diet change.  Plus there are so many other indicators of improved body composition and a healthier body; clothes fitting looser, increased endurance, stress management, sleeping better and feeling better overall.


Weight loss is hard for a lot of people…probably most people! I mean, I know it’s hard for me! In this world of instantaneous everything, we look for ways that we can quickly receive the results we want from whatever it is we’re pursuing, even if it’s unrealistic. However, with our bodies that’s not a risk we can take.

We need to be more willing to give up the dream of a magic solution that will make our bodies become what we want them to be. We need to be willing to put in the hard work at the gym, in the outdoors, at home etc. We need to incorporate better foods into our diet. We need to develop self discipline. We need to drink a lot more water. We need to get more sleep.


The beautiful thing is that from all of this, not only do we gain the body that we’ve always wanted, but we also gain pride (the good kind), confidence, inner and physical strength, perseverance, and discipline. How amazing is that?? Isn’t that worth coming to grips with the truth that so many people refuse to believe: Quick fixes don’t work. I think it is. Every day I get to see people’s lives changing for the better or staying the same in frustrating stagnation as they react positively and negatively to this truth.   1. Very true!! Sometimes friends ask me to help them lose weight and what’s the fastest way…but actually recently one of my friends asked me to help her lose 20 lbs in 8 months…I’m like, “thank you for being realistic!!”

And it is so annoying that celebrities and “fitness” magazines are touting these women who lost weight really quickly and tell you all their crazy secrets… whenever I read those articles they always make me think “yeah, they might be skinny – but are they healthy?” That’s the most important thing, being fit and HEALTHY, not skinny!

  3. Love this and completely agree! It’s taken me a long time to realize this, but the only way to truly be heathy is to eat right and exercise. It seems so easy, so it’s a wonder why people feel the need to try other things!
