Reebok Spartan Race GIVEAWAY!!!

In honor of my birthday TOMORROW, I have a present for you… a giveaway!

Have you ever wanted to participate in a race you could brag to all of your friends about?

Have you ever thought “I’m super awesome…I could do that” while watching Ninja Warrior or Survivor?

Have you ever wanted to feel particularly hard core?

Look no further than…the REEBOK SPARTAN RACE!

How cool is that?? I mean, I would need to work on my push ups or something before attempting this (oh yeah, and have a foot that functions), but you guys are super hard core, so know you’re already good to go!

I love that these races go beyond the basic dirty dash or mud run. There’s awesome obstacles and challenges that make completing this race truly an accomplishment! This is something to brag about!

Spartan Races has generously donated 1 free race entry to one of their 2014 races!! This is about a $95 value!

I know many of you are reading from Arizona and Utah, so note the following upcoming races: Arizona Spartan Sprint February 8 and 9 and the Las Vegas Super Spartan on April 5 (I know this isn’t in UT but it’s a close enough drive…road trip!). For the rest of you, check out their schedule. They have races all over the country!

Use the Rafflecopter to enter:

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Good luck!! I can’t wait to hear about this! I’ll have to keep this on my list of races I need to try! The Rafflecopter closes on Sunday night and a winner will be announced on Monday morning.

*Please note that I am not being compensated for this and all opinions are my own. Reebok Spartan Races donated one free race entry in exchange for helping them get the word out there.*

Meeting Rascal Flatts

Yesterday I went to the gym before work. I wanted to run a couple of miles but was only about to do one. And even that was a lot. A half mile in my foot was hurting so very badly. The pain started to go away by the time I hit one mile and I thought I could probably go longer but decided not to push it. I then went and did a half hour work out on that swishy machine that is like an elliptical but the arms don’t move. You know which one I’m talking about? Anyway, it works me!! I was so sweaty by the time I was done with it!

Well, then I was getting ready for work and thinking about how I didn’t have anything cool to write about on the blog for today when I got a text from my mom saying she had an exciting possibility and to call her. Rascal Flatts was coming to my dad’s work (he’s in radio) and could I get work off to come down to a meet and greet?!

Um, yeah I was sure going to try to make it!! Luckily, my supervisor is pretty chill and let me go! So after a short Q&A session, I got to walk up, shake their hands, and take a picture with them. Unfortunately, they were running late to make their flight, so we didn’t have time for autographs. Bummer. Still way cool to meet them!!

I got asked by one of my dad’s coworkers if I was 16 years old. Hmm. I know I look young, but 9 years younger?! Come on, people. At least tell me I look old enough to be out of high school! Haha! We had a good laugh over that one!

Check out this fog we had going on last night. Some parts were really thick and I couldn’t see much when I was on my way home. Don’t worry though. I made it home in one piece. And yes, that’s a car totally running a red light, as you can see our light had just turned green.

Sooo…my friend and I are trying to go to Europe this summer!! We’ve never been and we’re thinking London and Paris for 10 days total. However, we don’t really know where to start with the planning!! So please, if you have any recommendations on airlines, where to stay, things we ABSOLUTELY need to see, let me know! We need all the help we can get. I’m so excited though. We need to start booking things asap!

Favorite band/style of music? I love country!!

Do people tell you that you look older or younger than your age?

“If we do not take time to be well…”

Working at a wellness company, my coworkers are of course always talking about different things they’re learning when it comes to health and wellness. Coaches are constantly emailing each other with cool articles they’ve read and I always think “Hey, I bet some of my readers would find these interesting”. So I email them to myself and then totally forget about them. Well now I’ve remembered, so here are some articles you might find interesting:

I also love this quote one coach sent around about the importance of preventative medicine:

In preventing illness whenever possible, watch for the stress indicators in yourself and in others you may be able to help. As with your automobile, be alert to rising temperatures, excessive speed, or a tank low on fuel. When you face “depletion depression,” make the requisite adjustments. Fatigue is the common enemy of us all—so slow down, rest up, replenish, and refill. Physicians promise us that if we do not take time to be well, we most assuredly will take time later on to be ill.

So, so true.

In other news, my cousin is letting me borrow this book and it’s so funny so far. I love her TV show, too. I love people who are witty.

Countdown to 25: 3 days. Here’s one picture from the party. Still working on getting more. We were all decked out in gold for our joint party 🙂

Hope you’re all having a great day! We’re half way to the weekend! 🙂

It’s Just the Truth

Thanks so much for your kind words. It really does suck to have to change race distances but I know it’s for the best. I really do need to get in to see a doctor!

Now for some Truth Tuesday:

  • I hate going to sleep with the closet door anything but firmly closed. So it’s really freaking me out that I accidentally took one half of my closet door off the track and can’t get it back on. The bad guys are going to get me!
  • Speaking of the bad guys, I have to sleep on the side of the bed furthest from the door. Because obviously that’s safer.
  • I’m an emotional eater. So the last couple of days have been less than healthy. I really need to get back on track.
  • It’s driving me crazy not being able to run. I really need to run some stress off and I hate that I need to save my foot. But I guess I kind of need it long term to keep running.
  • I just found out that avocados are technically fruit. So are tomatoes, but I already knew that.
  • At my birthday party on Friday, I had cousins from both sides attend and they were all the hit of my party. Everyone loved them. I officially have the coolest family ever.
  • Sometimes I miss working for a state run institution. Like one that would make it so that I would have MLK day off of work.
  • I just dropped a ton of money fixing my car. It hurts. But it sucked worse not having my own transportation for two days. #firstworldproblems
  • I have a couple of giveaways in the works and I’m excited to get them to you! (I know, I’m such a tease)
  • One time I was walking home from school, carrying my violin as usual, when an older lady rolled down her window, pointed at me and said longingly “I used to play the violin!”. I remember thinking how sad that “used to” sounded. Now that’s me. I used to play the violin. and it makes me sad.
  • 4 days… 🙂 I may or may not have told someone on the phone at work yesterday that I’m 25. Close enough…
  • My mom took me to lunch yesterday and then asked if I wanted to walk next door and get a little cake to share. Um, yeah I did. She then ordered my favorite flavor. She’s the best mom ever.

Your turn! Share some truth!

I’ve made the switch

The party went off without a hitch. It was soo much fun! I can’t wait to show you pictures of it. I’ll put them up as soon as I have access to them, since they were taken on my friend’s camera. Much better than iPhone pictures 🙂

My roommate and I are doing a 30 day squat challenge. Today is Day 3. You guys should totally join us!

I did this circuit that Cori put on Instagram a couple of times last week and I really like it. For those days when I don’t have quite as much time as going to the gym requires, this at least makes me sore for a day or two.

Can we just talk about how Walmart has these “Skinny Cow” treats in their Valentine’s candy aisle. I’m pretty sure being given something like this would be a deal breaker for me.

Also, I have officially switched from the Half marathon to the 5K for the She Runs retreat. I just can’t run very far without my foot hurting (it now hurts just about every day without me even doing anything) and I don’t want to push it. I’m soo sad to not be doing the half marathon, but I’m happy to still be going to the retreat, for a road trip with some great girlfriends and to still be able to run a little bit. Now my goal is to rock the 5K. Injuries suck, y’all. They suck bad. I feel a little dumb for having to switch but I know it’s the right decision. I’ll just be cheering on all my friends who will be running the half!!

In other news, it’s officially my birthday week! My days of 24 are quickly coming to a close. 5 days. 5 little days!

Are you joining me for the squat challenge??

What do you like to get for Valentine’s?

Have you ever had to DNS or switch to a shorter race?

My people are good people

A quick little catch up:

Tuesday night I went bowling with a group of friends. So. Dang. Fun! Even though I was probably the worst one there (no exaggeration). Also the place was kind of sketchy but $7 for shoes and 3 games? Can’t beat that!

Wednesday is my family’s anniversary. It’s the day my parents were married and I’m so very grateful they made that decision. I love them so much!

Deb and I also went shopping for our Gold themed birthday party that is TONIGHT! It’s my golden birthday this year, so the party is gold themed. It’s been so fun to plan. Here is some of the food we bought…all gold of course.

Then last night we started decorating. Here’s a sneak peek for you!

I love mine and Deborah’s combined birthday party. This is our 5th year putting one on and it’s always a blast. Hopefully this year it still is, even though we’ve moved to a new city. It will be an great mix of old and  new friends.

I just wanted to take a second and tell you two stories from this week to illustrate how lucky I am to have the friends that I do. I think it’s soo important to surround yourself with good people, those who will inspire you to be a better person. So I want to brag about my friends for a bit, as I’ve found myself feeling so grateful to have them in my life.

Tuesday night after bowling, we went to to a place to get some food because of course the boys were hungry. There was this sweet old man running the place and it was close to closing time. He brought all of our food out, he brought us all waters and was so, so nice. My friends decided we should leave him a tip, even though this wasn’t the type of establishment where you get served or you tip anyone. By the time we had all put money on the table there was around $20. I’m pretty sure we didn’t even spend that much on our food.

Then Wednesday night, Deborah and I were leaving a religion class we’re taking and an older lady (who we found out later is from Tonga) was asking people as they left if they were going downtown. She had missed her bus and needed to get down to her next job. Well, the people that attend the class we were at all live pretty close to the church building, which was at least 20-25 minutes from downtown. Nobody was going to be heading down there to go home. As we left, Deb looked at me and said “We should give her a ride, huh?” So we turned around and went and told her we would take her downtown, which ended up taking about an hour out of our night. But it was awesome and interesting to talk to her as we drove her to her next stop for the night.

These are the types of people I love to have around. They lift me up (thank you, Josh Groban), they really do make me want to be a better person and they spread love and joy in the world. I want to be more like my friends. I want to be that friend to others.

What have I missed from your life? Catch me up!

Who are some of the good people in your life?

Get Walking!

Something I’ve had to work with my participants over the last couple of months is where to exercise during the winter. I’m in Utah, so I do understand not wanted to go out into the ice and snow or the inversion. I work with a lot of people all over the country, so I get to hear all about the weather being experienced all over the midwest and east coast. Since we still have at least a couple more months of winter, I thought we should take about indoor walking.

I do have a gym membership, but many of my participants don’t and either don’t want one or can’t afford one. They need access to something cheap (or free!), easy and that doesn’t take a lot of time out of their day. One popular solution? Walking around malls or their office buildings!

Meg with Destiny USA,  in Syracuse, NY, reached out to me and shared some awesome facts  and tips about walking and utilizing shopping centers for exercise. Here are some of my favorites:

  • FACT: In one power walking workout, you can help to lower your blood pressure, improve your mood, and help reduce risk or manage Type 2 Diabetes.
  • TIP: Utilize water fountains or carry a water bottle. Cold water increases metabolism.
  • TIP: Walk up the escalators, don’t ride. It’s a resistance workout that will help burn up to 10 calories per minute!
  • TIP: Wear less to create your own body heat. (Plus it makes shopping and trying on clothes soo much easier…not that you’re always shopping when you go walking at the mall. That would be dangerous)
  • TIP: Avoid locking your knees when you’re waiting in line. Posture can effect your workouts in terms of endurance and muscular stress.

I did a little research on my own and also found these awesome reasons to get in a good walk, whether outside or in the mall!

  • Strengthen your bones
  • Improve your balance and coordination
  • Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
  • Improve blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid profile
  • Can help you kick your tobacco habit
  • Reduces stress
  • Increases energy
  • Boosts your immune system

I think sometimes as runners or CrossFit doers or yogies or whatever we are, we forget about how awesome the basic exercise we learned as toddlers is for us and for our health. Plus if you do bring your wallet with you every now and then, you may just find super cute things on sale like I did last night. Walking + sales = happy girl.

You can’t really tell in the picture but it’s sparkly gold. For my gold themed Golden Birthday party coming up. So excited!
